UPV PE Prof, students, and staff win medals in 2022 Virtual Anyo

A team composed of a UPV Physical Education professor, students, and staff won medals and ranked 2nd place in the overall championship in the recently concluded 2022 National Larong Pinoy Invitational Open Virtual Anyo and Skills Arnis Championship held on February 13, 2022. 

Professor Fernando S. Tinagan, playing coach, of the Department of Physical Education (DoPE) – College of Arts and Sciences (CAS); two college students from the School of Technology; Ms. Fraulyn Marey Moralidad and Ms. Amigael Pamplona; Ms. Paula Marie B. Deloria of the UP High School Iloilo; and Mar S. Sencil from the UPV Library voluntarily competed in the 2022 National Larong Pinoy Invitational Open Virtual Anyo and Skills Arnis Championship held on February 13, 2022 organized by the Pro-Active Arnis League headed by Guro Joel Madrona, Angeles City, Philippines.

Prof. Tinagan won 6 gold medals and 2 silver medals. The gold medals are for the following categories: 1) Arnis Standard (SA) Unang Anyo, 2) Arnis Standard Pangalawang Anyo, 3) Combative Tire Skills-Continuous, 4) Combative Tire -Skills-Corto, 5) Combative Tire -Skills-Largo-(1-meter), 6) Combative Tire-Skills-Largo-(2 meters). Silver medals were clinched for the following categories: 1) Standard - Anyo Punyo, 2) Standard Anyo Abaniko.

Ms. Moralidad won 3 gold medals for 1) Standard Unang Anyo, 2) SA - Synchronized, and 3) SA - DUO, and Ms. Pamplona also won 2 golds and 1 silver medal for 1) Standard Anyo – Synchronized, 2) SA - DUO and 3) SA - Unang Anyo.

Ms. Deloria on the other hand won 1 gold and 1 bronze medal for 1) SA - Synchronized, and 2) SA - Unang Anyo, respectively.

Mr. Sencil for his part won 2 gold medals for the following categories: 1) Standard Unang Anyo and 2) Standard Pangalawang Anyo. 

Meanwhile, the UPV Modern Arnis Tapi-Tapi International (UPV-MATTI Team) ranked 2nd in the overall championship for the first time in its almost 2 years of participation garnering a total of 14 gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal as it competed with other famous Martial Arts Clubs and other teams from state colleges and universities in the Philippines.

The UPV-Modern Arnis Tapi-Tapi International (MATTI) is a voluntary club that welcomes interested UPV students, faculty, and staff to learn basic arnis for mental fitness and for recreational activities, especially during this pandemic.

Prof. Ruben Gamala, Director of the UPV Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, and Dr. Rey Carlo “Ompoy” Gonzales, Director of the UPV Office of Alumni Relations were volunteer club consultants.
