Dr. Clement C. Camposano, UP Visayas Chancellor; Dr. Rhoda Mae C. Simora, project leader of the CRISPR Project; Dr. Casiano Choresca Jr., co-project leader from the DA-NFRDI-Fisheries Biotechnology Center (FBC); and Dr. Sharon N. Nuñal, IFPT Director, led the blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Fish Gene-Editing Laboratory-UPV Facility on December 6, 2023.
The facility is located at the IFPT Fisheries Chemistry Laboratory, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo. Pastor Jay-R Latore of the local New Heights Fundamental Baptist Church, officiated the blessing of the new lab.
In his speech, Chancellor Camposano recognized the efforts of the CRISPR Project in taking the lead in promoting the exceptional benefits of fisheries biotechnology through CRISPR/Cas9 technology.
This facility is designed to capacitate UPV to conduct cutting edge CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing research on commercially important fish species in the future. The UPV facility will be devoted to gene construct design, bioinformatics, and data analysis.
This facility treads another milestone in the University’s quest to promote excellence in research, innovation, and extension services.
