UPV Museum features works of artists in the Visayas region

Kasikas, the Visayas region’s exhibit of ‘Bagong Biswal,’ opened  at the UPV Museum of Arts and Cultural Heritage’s Hanas - Changing Exhibition Gallery 2 in Iloilo City on April 14, 2023.

Opening the exhibit were Chancellor Clement Camposano, Faculty Regent Carl Mark Ramota, Prof. Dennis Montera of UP Cebu and Chairman of the National Committee on Visual Arts of the NCCA, Vice Chancellor Philip Ian Padilla, NCVA representatives Western and Eastern Visayas, and artist Manny Garibay. Garibay represented Artletics Inc., which is managing the exhibition project. City Councilor Allan Zaldivar represented Mayor Jerry Treñas and delivered his message during the opening program.

The Kasikas Bagong Biswal 2023 exhibition for the Visayas puts together works of artists from Bohol, Cebu, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Leyte, Samar, and Siquijor.  Kasikas refers to a light noise like rustling silk fabric or leaves blowing in the wind. The title of the show is apt considering that the works of the artists have proven art’s capacity, not only to flutter and move surrounding air but to gather force, disturb, and overturn common perceptions of how art is done in the regions.

In the exhibit notes,  Kaye O’Yek  wrote that the show “is a joyous celebration of heterogeneity amalgamated into a contrasting yet harmonious whole we can, indeed, proudly name taliambong, arte, sining, alampat, pamintal, kinulit, and all other personal definitions of creative adventures.  Kasikas is the beginning of a conversation, gaining momentum with Visayan artists' remarkable command of material, concept, myth-making, and spirit.”
