UPV led by CAS COP-BIDANI trains community leaders of Barangay Lumangan (Sitio 1)

Nineteen barangay leaders participated in three half-day training sessions on health and nutrition held in Barangay Lumangan, (Sitio 1, formerly UPV Relocation 1), Miagao, Iloilo on November 14, 22, and 23, 2022. 

The leaders were composed of Barangay Officials, Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholar, Barangay Tanod, Barangay Secretary, Day Care Workers, and the SK Chairperson. 

The training titled “CASangkol Pabaskugon, Ikaayong Lawas Kag Nutrisyon Pasanyugon: Health and Nutrition Leadership and Management Training for Barangay Health and Nutrition Leaders” primarily aimed to build the leaders’ capacity to inspire them to work together with other local stakeholders to achieve better outcomes for health and nutrition. 

It was co-organized by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Development through the Site Acquisition and Resettlement Project (SARP) as part of their community service in partnership with COP-BIDANI of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Ms. Antoinette Louise Macani, Ms. Xenia Monica Cabrias, and Mr. John Vincent Sibal of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, served as resource persons together with Mr. Marianito Ramirez, Jr., Mx. John Bert Tutisura, Ms. Elna Mariel Nanta, Mr. Joemar Cagampang, and Prof. Josephine Firmase of COP- BIDANI. 

A discussion about health and nutrition situation, health challenges in the community and local leaders’ crucial role in addressing these challenges were among the inputs. The inputs also included the municipal health and nutrition situation shared by Mr. Carl Justin Duran from the Miagao Rural Health Unit. 

The establishment of a barangay nutrition program involving deworming and feeding, monthly community cleanliness campaign, physical fitness program, procurement of medicines and health equipment, including a weighing scale and “anti-bisyo” (smoking, alcoholism, and drug abuse) campaign, have been earmarked as important action points for integration into the barangay health plan.

During the closing program, a weighing scale to support the barangay nutrition program was given to Lumangan. 

Support for the training has been provided by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension through a public service grant and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development, represented during the activity by Ms. Jenelie Acosa and Ms. Marjorie Nagabe.

COP-BIDANI serves as the public service arm of the College of Arts and Sciences.
