UPV hosts online book launch of Pangalangan

UP Visayas hosted the online book launch of retired judge Raul C. Pangalangan entitled Philippine Materials in International Law on February 23, 2022.

The launch was attended by Sen. Juan Edgardo M. Angara and Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor, Jr., who gave remarks on the author and the book.

For his part, Chancellor Clement C. Camposano said that UPV’s hosting of the book launch this year was most appropriate as UP Visayas will be celebrating the 75 years of UP presence in Iloilo.

Pangalangan is a Professor of the UP College of Law. A graduate of Political Science and Law from the University of the Philippines, he received his master's and doctorate Law degrees from Harvard Law School.

He was elected one of 22 new associate members of the Institut de Droit International (IDI/Institute of International Law) and is also the second Filipino to be elected to the IDI, the first being the late senior associate justice of the Supreme Court (1994-1995), Florentino P. Feliciano.

Membership to the IDI is by invitation only from among its members who comprise the world’s leading public international lawyers and professors, including judges of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court (ICC), both located at The Hague, Netherlands.

According to the law.upd.edu.ph website, the Philippine Materials in International Law is “a collection of international law materials relating to the Philippines. It engages the need for comparative perspectives of new theories by giving an in-depth look at international law with the use of Philippine history and experience, addressing issues such as how Marcos’s human rights abuses were litigated abroad but never in the Philippine courts, and how victim claims for reparations are blocked by the Philippine Government.”

UP College of Law Dean Edgardo Carlo Vistan II commented on the book while resident historian of the Province of Iloilo, Mr. Nereo Lujan presented interesting facts on Iloilo’s history.
