UPV Graduate School hosts dialogue for academe, industry, and government on new curricular offering

The UPV Graduate School organized a Academe-Industry-Government Dialogue at the Training Rooms, 2ndFloor, GCEB, UPV Iloilo City Campus on June 19, 2023.  The purpose of the dialogue is to obtain industry and government input on the design and development of a graduate program, as well as their support to ensure the sustainability of the degree program.

Dr. Aura C. Matias, a member of the UP PSM Technical Working Group, emphasized the importance of academe actively listening to industry and creating programs that are responsive to the evolving landscape. She highlighted the various opportunities for collaboration among academe, industry, and government in the development of academic programs through the PSM Program. This collaborative approach promotes a dynamic partnership, ensuring that academic offerings are responsive to industry needs and the ever-changing times.

Dr. Luis G. Sison, the Director of the UP Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (UP TTBDO), provided participants with valuable insights on learning and cultivating a "technopreneurial" mindset. Additionally, Dr. Reynold D. Tan, the Director of UPV TTBDO, shared success stories that highlighted the fruitful collaborations and partnerships between academia, industry, and government.

The subsequent focus group discussions led to the identification of industry gaps in competency and technology, as well as the prioritization of feasible solutions to address the challenges that were identified. The dialogue concluded with the signing of a Letter of Intent, symbolizing the commitment to collaborate in the development of a joint PSM in Techno-entrepreneurship program.

UP Visayas is committed to collaborating with industry partners and relevant government agencies to develop the Professional Science Master (PSM) in Techno-entrepreneurship program. This innovative interdisciplinary degree program combines technology, engineering, and business to provide students with scientific training and valuable business skills. The program's "science plus" component integrates rigorous scientific study with practical coursework in management, policy, or the process of scaling up innovative ideas into successful enterprises. Graduates of the program are well-prepared to pursue careers as entrepreneurs, technology managers, or innovation consultants.

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Philip Ian P. Padilla, and Graduate School Dean Dr. Rowena Paz Gelvezon were also present during the dialogue. (With sources from UPV Graduate School)
