Thirteen (13) faculty members from the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) served as resource speakers during the Learners’ Convergence Philippines 2024 held in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu from July 8-13.

Dr. Bernice Vania Mamauag, Prof. Lylve Maliz Zeller, Prof. Aniceta Patricia Alingasa-Aguirre, Prof. Augil Marie Robles, Prof. Gay Margarett Gange, Ms. Leah Escol, Ms. Czarinnah Araneta, Ms. Jezebelle Baldo-Villanueva, Ms. Precious Maecah Ratay, Ms. Khent Adenix, Ms. Jhayvan Eve Quitoy, Mr. Jhio Jan Navarro, and Mr. John Vincent Sibal run and facilitated the Fireside Chat session in various billeting schools around Lapu-Lapu City on the night of July 11, 2024.

The LearnCon PH was spearheaded by the Youth Formation Division (YFD) of the Department of Education. It was participated in by around 1,824 learners and youth formators from the 228 divisions of the 17 regions of the country. The five-day event consisted of a series of talks, group sessions, and other engaging activities designed to empower learners to become leaders of change.

The last of these sessions and activities is the Fireside Chat which aimed to “encourage deep thinking, share experiences, and facilitated personal and collective insights among learners.”

Following this aim, the Division of Social Sciences designed a module that enabled the participants to articulate their individual leadership experiences, affirm their values and motivations in leadership and visions for change, and learn the importance of self-awareness and self-management for student leaders.

During the session participants were asked to share about their experiences in the last four days of the LearnCon. They were also instructed to plot, reflect, and share their leadership timelines. A brief lecture on Socio-emotional Learning and Authentic Leadership followed the sharing session to help participants process their outputs. The participants were then asked to come up with a shared vision for their schools and communities by creating a collage out of their timelines. A “Pledge for Authentic Leadership” capped the night’s session.

Ms. Ayaka Datuin, Fireside Chat coordinator from the Youth Formation Division, said that the resource persons from the UPV-DSS inspired not only the learners and their chaperones, but also the YFD officers who were there to witness the session. “We adore your professionalism and servant leadership mindset,” she added.

The Division of Social Sciences participation in the LearnCon PH 2024 is a testament to its continuing commitment to deliver evidence-based public service activities that bolsters the University’s institutional values of honor, excellence, and service.
