UPV-CFOS hosts Pisay scholars in science immersion program anew

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) is again hosting scholars from the Philippine Science High School–Western Visayas Campus (PSHS-WVC), popularly known as Pisay, in a Science Immersion Program (SIP) to learn and gain experience in aquaculture and post-harvest fisheries.

Nine selected students will undergo an 80-hour onsite internship program at the Institute of Aquaculture (IA) and Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT).

IA faculty member and Pisay alumnae Asst. Prof. Dr. Iris Ann G. Borlongan, IA officer-in-charge Asst. Prof. Dr. Carmelo S. del Castillo, and the institute’s acting administrative officer Ms. Soledad S. Garibay officially welcomed six incoming Grade 11 senior high school students in an opening program held on July 18, 2023 for a 10-day immersion in the institute.

Together with their SIP coordinator Mr. Elizalde Miguel Flores, the Pisay students also paid a courtesy call on CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT) will be hosting two incoming Grade 11 and one incoming Grade 12 Pisay students from July 21 to August 11, 2023. A formal opening ceremony will be on July 21.

PSHS-WVC, one of the PSHS System's 16 campuses governed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), invited CFOS again to be one of their partners in the implementation of SIP, a required course that exposes students to vast and in-depth scientific research.

The internship program aims to engage the students in actual science laboratory activities and field works in order to enhance their scientific and laboratory skills; to interact, collaborate, and establish linkages with scientists, researchers, and experts in preparation for their research undertaking during senior high school; and to motivate them to pursue future career in science and technology.

Through the years, the premiere science high school recognizes CFOS as a valuable collaborating agency for the SIP.

Pisay underscored the contribution of the UPV-CFOS in providing the necessary training to their students during their immersion that motivated them to embark on careers in fisheries and aquaculture.

Students will be provided with lectures on a variety of topics and will conduct hands-on laboratory activities including data collection, data analyses and interpretation, and results validation. They will also write reports as well as prepare and present oral and poster presentations.
