UPV and Rare, Inc. conducts capability-building activities for Northern Antique coastal communities

The University of the Philippine Visayas through the Center for West Visayan Studies, and Rare, Inc. collaborated in conducting capability-building activities for various stakeholders in Northern Antique.

The seminar titled “Towards Enhancing Fisheries Management in Northern Antique” was conducted on November 21-22, 2023 in Pandan, Antique. It aims to equip deputized Bantay Dagat members, Fisheries Technologists, and MFARMC leads of municipalities of Libertad, Pandan, Sebaste, and Culasi with knowledge and skills related to fishing gear identification and enforcement of fisheries and environmental regulations.

Another activity called the “Fish Forever Community Educators (FishForCE) Training” was conducted on November 23-24, 2023 at Pandan for Fish Forever Savings Club Leaders and LGU Coordinators of Libertad, Pandan, and Sebaste. It aims to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in effective facilitation, fisheries management, financial behaviors, innovative finance, and social protection. Fish Forever is Rare’s community-led solution to revitalize coastal marine habitats, protect biodiversity, and secure the livelihoods of fisher households and their communities.

The activities were part of UPV’s effort to foster conversations with coastal communities and other stakeholders as it continues to increase its presence in the area through its UPV Antique Extension in Nauring, Pandan.
