UPHSI Student Council hosts Day of Remembrance activity

The University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo Student Council organized the UPHSI Day of Remembrance with the theme “Karapatan 101: A Human Rights Talk” on September 20, 2024, at the UPV Auditorium, Iloilo City Campus.

The discussion was attended by the student body to enhance their understanding of human rights and the historical context of Martial Law in the Philippines.

Two films were shown: “Timeline: Mga Nangyari noong Martial Law” by NXT and “What Martial Law Victims Want to Tell the Youth.”

Mr. Christopher C. Montano, Chief of the Promotion and Advocacy Division of the Commission on Human Rights Region VI, talked on the topic “Human Rights as Fundamental Right.”

He challenged the students to go back and dig deeper into history, not just believe what the internet or social media tells us, and quoted, “Those who forget history are bound to repeat it."

Meanwhile, Ms. Ymah Belle L. Beraye, President of the UPV Pangkat Lingkod Bayan, talked on the topic “The Youth and the Protection of Human Rights.”

She emphasized that the youth can contribute to advancing and protecting human rights by joining youth organizations and participating in student council activities, such as providing venues for promoting awareness and raising consciousness about human rights.

The speakers entertained questions from the students, including inquiries about the role of foreign governments during Martial Law, significant changes following Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s overthrow, and how supporters of the Marcos regime switched sides as they recognized the administration's anomalies.

Ms. Gianne Dominique Zamora, the Junior High School Vice President of the UPHSI Student Council, gave her response on behalf of the student body.

Assistant Professor Joven S. Llabore gave his closing remarks, expressing his gratitude to the speakers and reflecting on the importance of understanding human rights.
