The NSTP-CWTS Section 4 Group 1, composed of first-year BS Chemical Engineering and BS Economics students of the University of the Philippines Visayas, held an event titled "Nourishing the Minds and Bodies of Residents of Barangay Baybay Norte, Miagao, Iloilo” on May 11, 2024. The event, hosted at the Barangay Baybay Norte Day Care Center, drew 30 participants, including 27 children aged 5-12 and three parents or guardians.
The program was divided into two main parts: an interactive seminar and a feeding program. Registration commenced at 8:30 am, with children receiving brochures featuring word puzzles to keep them entertained while waiting. The event officially started at 9:00 am with an energetic welcome by Lester Lapuz, who engaged the participants with singing and dancing to set a lively tone.
Dr. Rhea P. Palacios, the Miagao Municipal Health Officer, delivered an engaging talk on the "Pinggang Pinoy," a balanced diet strategy using a plate model familiar to the audience. Accompanying her was Ms. Mary Christine Molejona, the Nutrition Program Coordinator, who demonstrated proper handwashing techniques to the children.
To reinforce the lessons from the seminar, the host conducted a Q&A session, rewarding children who answered correctly with prizes. The event continued with a series of parlor games, such as The Boat is Sinking, Hep Hep Hooray, Dance Freeze, and Bring Me. Winners received stationery prizes, including pencils, sharpeners, and coloring pens. At 11:00 am, a nutritious meal of yogurt milk, sopas, and giniling was served as part of the feeding program, ensuring the children received a balanced mix of vitamins, carbohydrates, and proteins.
The event concluded with a thank you to all participants and the awarding of certificates of appreciation to the Barangay Baybay Norte LGU and Barangay Captain, Hon. Serafin Monteclaro, accepted by Barangay Kagawad Hon. Elizabeth P. Cabaya.
A photo session for documentation followed. Key figures present at the event included the NSTP-CWTS Section 4 adviser Mr. Alan Dino Moscoso, guest speakers Dr. Rhea P. Palacios and Ms. Mary Christine Molejona, and Barangay Kagawad Hon. Elizabeth P. Cabaya. The event was a testament to the students' dedication to community service and their commitment to promoting health and nutrition among the residents of Barangay Baybay Norte.
