Two administrative staff from the University of the Philippines Visayas participated in the Seminar-Workshop on Records Recovery and Disaster Preparedness, which was held last 19-20 April 2023 at Iloilo Science and Technology University Miagao Hostel, Miagao, Iloilo. The participants were Ana Liza A. Subade, Administrative Officer from the Office of the University Registrar (OUR) and Mr. Carlo V. Gedangoni, Administrative Assistant from the Office of Human Resource and Development Office (HRDO).
The seminar-workshop was organized and conducted by the National Archives of the Philippines (NAP), which assists government agencies in protecting and preserving vital public records and archives in areas hit by natural and anthropogenic calamities. It was attended by participants from both national and local government offices, and from state colleges and universities. The goal of the seminar-workshop was to ensure that government organizations can resume its operations after the occurrence of a disaster.
Hon. Victorino M. Manalo, Executive Director of NAP, was one of the resource persons.
Topics discussed during the seminar were emergency planning and disaster preparedness, disaster prevention, disaster preparation, disaster response, disaster recovery and overview of archival preservation at the NAP. Since, the Philippines is considered a disaster-prone area due to the numerous typhoons and its location in the Pacific ring of fire, the importance of a disaster preparedness plan and a safe repository of archival records were emphasized. The disaster preparedness plan will serve as a guide on how to respond efficiently and quickly in the event of any disaster or emergency situation. The agencies were also encouraged to seek advice, assistance and training in establishing their disaster preparedness plan. A workshop was held for every major topic and seminar presentation.
Ms. Subade and Mr. Gedangoni will deliver an echo-seminar to the OUR and HRDO staff, respectively, after the NAP seminar-workshop.
