Dr. Rowena Paz Gelvezon was recently appointed as the Dean of the Graduate School of UP Visayas during the 1372nd Meeting of the UP Board of Regents held on July 28, 2022.
Dr. Gelvezon finished her PhD (Business Management) at the University of St. La Salle, her Master of Management (Business Management) from UP Visayas and her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the University of the Philippines (Diliman).
She was the Director of the Graduate Program Office at UP Visayas prior to her appointment. She was part of the committee that worked for the elevation of the Graduate Program Office to Graduate School.
From 2002 to 2005, she served as Vice-Chancellor for Administration of UP Visayas. Gelvezon is well-published and heads various researches as project leader.
The creation of the UPV Graduate School was approved during the BOR’s 1370th meeting on April 28, 2022. It was promoted from the UPV Graduate Program Office, which at the moment offers a diploma program, a Master's Degree in Science, a Master's Program for professionals, and a Doctorate in Fisheries.
The GS will be regarded as one of the UPV units that awards degrees. Its planned organizational structure will be headed by a dean, with the support of a college secretary. Prof. Rica P. Cainglet will be joining the Graduate School as College Secretary.
Prof. Cainglet is an Assistant Professor of the UPV College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Department of Chemistry. She finished her degrees in BS Chemistry and MS Chemistry from UP Diliman. She teaches Chemistry courses in College and in Senior High School. She specializes in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, and her research interest is Natural Products. She was Chair of the Department of Chemistry from 2009 to 2012, and College Secretary of CAS from October 2014 to December 2020. Currently, she is also the UPV Representative in the UP System General Education (GE) Council.
The GS aims to create a graduate program that emphasizes research, to systematically maintain and mainstream knowledge development as a top priority in UPV's knowledge creation and public service agenda, and to raise the university's reputation and recognition both domestically and abroad.
