TLRC, DPSM, strengthen students’ math skills

To strengthen and enrich students' foundational skills in Math, review different mathematical operations, and hone skills in problem solving, the UPV Teaching and Learning Resource Center in collaboration with the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (DPSM) operationalized the second run of its supplemental program for mathematics courses aptly named, Algebreak! 2.0: Breaking Down Problems into Solutions.

The program ran from October 7 to December 6, 2024 and was spearheaded by the TLRC while the faculty members from the DPSM served as faculty tutors, each faculty member serving as tutor once a week for a group of student-participants. Both units of UP Visayas worked closely to plan the program design of Algebreak! 2.0.

Sixty-three students who confirmed their slots in the program underwent rigorous review and tutorial sessions, facilitated by the faculty members of the DPSM, namely, Mr. Kenneth Aldwin Villacarlos, Mr. Jaser John Dago-oc, Mr. Jayvee Castañeda, Mr. Lorenz Terania, Mr. Hyke Maybay, Ms. Meloh Aleyen Grace Consular, Mr. Maikel Roi Aguilar, Ms. Excell Joy Magno, and Mr. Joseph Victor Sumbong. Mr. RB Jann Jamindang of the Mathematics Cluster also served as Coordinator for the Program, working closely with the DPSM Chair, Prof. Kent Christian Castor.

It can be noted that is 2022, TLRC conducted the same program however, it was only for a day. For the second run, TLRC and DPSM tried a different approach which lengthened the duration of the program to really focus on the topics needed by the students.

For the first three weeks of the program, the students were able to review polynomials, followed by the fourth session on special products, and the fifth session on factoring. The sixth to seventh week delved on rational expressions and the program ended with a two-week session on radicals.

Algebreak! 2.0 served as an apt venue for students to review and strengthen their mathematical skills as they elevate to the next level of mathematics courses based on their prescribed plan of study.

The TLRC, in collaboration with the DPSM, plans to sustain this program as they see it a fit opportunity to hone students’ skills and passion for mathematics.
