Pisay scholars complete 80-hour Science Immersion Program at UPV-SOTECH

The 80-hour Science Immersion Program (SIP) of the Philippine Science High School-West Visayas Campus (PSHS) students was completed at the School of Technology, UP Visayas. The SIP started on June 27 and ended on July 12, 2024.

Engr. Joemel G. Sumbing, PhD welcomed the students, Denzel Rayne Valencia and Andre Kyn Naciongayo together with their teacher, Engr. Fritz Ortigas. On the first day of the program, Dr. Sumbing conducted the orientation on what to expect under his Balik-PhD project entitled “Dispersion and Sediment Degradation Model of Offshore Aquaculture Waste in the Philippines.” This project focuses on the environmental sustainability of aquaculture in the country.

During the program, Denzel and Andre engaged in different scientific activities. They conducted a literature review of journal articles, an on-site depth survey in Guimaras, and a respirometry experiment. The students made a bathymetry map from the depth survey and data analysis on the experiment.

On the last day of the program, Denzel and Andre presented their newly acquired knowledge by sharing their findings and experiences. During this culminating event, Mrs. Julnafe Libo-on accompanied the students and provided support as they shared their accomplishments.
