The Department of Physical Education (DoPE) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), Miagao, Iloilo celebrated its Annual PE DAY 2024, which proved to be a vibrant and inspiring event with the theme "Move Up: Building Resilience Through Physical Activities.”
The event echoed the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle among freshmen students taking PE 1 Foundations of Physical Fitness and the upper class students taking up PE 2 courses offered this First Semester AY 2024-2025. The PE Day activities were mainly held at the UPV covered court. The events were jumpstarted by a fun run of 3.2 kilometers around the UPV Miagao Campus.
The day’s program commenced with the opening remarks of the DoPE head, Asst. Prof. Brenda Lynn B. Arroyo, who emphasized the pivotal role of physical activities in fostering resilience and well-being. She encouraged everyone to participate enthusiastically in the day's activities and embrace the benefits of an active lifestyle.
UPV Chancellor Clement C. Camposano delivered an inspirational talk that resonated deeply with the attendees. “This is the best time to invest in an active and healthy life through exercise or physical activities,” he said.
Camposano, humorously reminded the audience of the importance of age-appropriate physical activities, stating “We don't start exercising at an old age like 40 years old and then expect to stay youthful. Similarly, if you're 16, don’t act like you’re 60 that you don’t like moving or exercising, and if you’re 60, don’t exercise like you’re 16 as we are limited in terms of endurance, flexibility, and fitness at senior age and die soon.” His words highlighted the significance of mindful and consistent physical activity across all stages of life.
After the fun run, various dance exercises and presentations took place, starting with an interpretative dance during the prayer, followed by an aerobic dance exercise that served as a warm up for the succeeding presentations. The other presentations included Philippine folk dance, cheer dance, and social dance. The newly introduced PE Combative Sports-Wushu did a class demonstration exercise. It was followed by a unique component of Wushu, which is Tai Chi Exercise that served as cool down after a very tiring but enjoyable series of physical activities the whole morning.
There were also presentations of various talents showcasing the phyiscal abilities of PE 1 classes, which brought out the creativity, energy, and teamwork of participants guided by the active and vigorous PE Faculty composed of Asst. Prof. Fernando S. Tinagan, Asst. Prof. Catherine B. Anecita, Asst. Prof. Rhoma Grace V. Pandan, Asst. Prof. Teresita Portugalete-Nolledo, Ms. Joni Cleo O. Pacalioga, Mr. Crisanto S. Sorsano Jr., Ms. Cleo Angelic L. Ruel, Ms. Neve Fairuza P. Tajaran, and Ms. Nica M. Molo, DoPE, admin staff.
In his closing remarks, Tinagan, senior faculty and the overall chairman of the PE Day 2024, congratulated and extended his gratitude to the members of the AdHoc Committee, participants, and supporters for making the event a success. The program concluded with an awarding ceremony, where winners of the fun run received a cash price, certificates, and special recognition.
The outstanding performances of the PE 1 classes were also celebrated.
