The Office of Student Affairs, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV-OSA) has helped prepare the incoming college students for their life on campus as “Iskolar ng Bayan.”
OSA held the “Incoming College Students and Parents’ Orientation” at the UPV Covered Court, Miagao campus on Aug. 1, 2024, to orient the students, together with their parents and guardians ahead of the opening of classes this month.
According to OSA Director Prof. Agustin Huyong, this annual activity is designed to orient the attendees “on the pertinent institutional information, guidelines, policies, and programs or services available to students.”
He said as newcomers, the students are expected to make adjustments in the new educational arena where academic and extra-curricular activities are likely different, broader, and more challenging.
Prof. Nilo Araneta, University Registrar, discussed the academic policies of UPV, which was followed by a series of talks from the various units and offices of the University, particularly the services offered by OSA and its units, the Health Services Unit, the Teaching and Learning Resource Center, the Office of the Chancellor, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod/Oblation Corps, the Gender and Development Program, the Security Service Force, and the Office of Anti-Sexual Harassment.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Clement Camposano delivered a message to the incoming students on the challenges ahead and what it means to be an Iskolar ng Bayan.
The Chancellor said: “You will hear the phrase ‘serve the people’ often – [it] is a mantra. But ask yourself this: how can you serve the people if you’re in the habit of seeking your own comfort? How can you serve the people if you are intimidated by life’s challenges?”
“Do your best to succeed – pull out all the stops, […] but learn to profit from failure. You will be immensely enriched by both,” he added.
