Miagao Tulad to join nat’l campus journ masterclass

To converge with other campus publications nationwide, the Communication and Media Studies' official publication will be attending a campus journalism webinar-workshop on November 7.

This is the second time Miagao Tulad was invited to a webinar-workshop following the Philippine Information Agency Journalism Convos. Five journalism students, namely Hans Ethan Carbonilla, Lara Grace Palay, Mary Paul Therese Agpalo, Jan Ella Brillantes, and Zion-Grace Rosareal, together with their adviser, Dr. Zoilo Andrada Jr., will be representing the publication at the two-day event via ZOOM.

“I am expecting to learn a lot, especially on tips and techniques on how to improve my writing. I checked out their primer for the two-day event, and I saw the topic sang talks, and I am looking forward, especially sa field reporting,” Brillantes shared her expectations for the event.

She added that she is excited about field reporting lectures because it is the career that she wants to pursue in the future, and she expects that the webinar-workshop will help her a lot.

The Campus Journalism Masterclass (CJM) is an annual journalism event spearheaded by the Kapunungan sa mga Mass Communicators of Silliman University, which aims to empower student journalists and their campus publications in the pursuit of advocating responsible journalism, especially in the time of the pandemic.

“In line with the theme “Establishing Progressive Student Publication,” we aim to empower or encourage the students and advisers on setting the agenda of their respective schools and communities with the stories they are publishing without fear and border,” Francis Ryan Pabiana, CJM Marketing Co-chairperson said.

CJM 2020 will invite the country’s sought-after resource speakers from the field of journalism. They will discuss digital student journalism, environmental journalism, student journalism on documentations and field reporting, and leadership and team-building training.

“We want to give the participants an online platform to learn from our speakers that would help them move to pursue their dreams in journalism or communications and as well as in running the publication,” Pabiana said.

He further added that CJM would also highlight the importance of giving space for science and environmental stories because it is something that most publications failed to include.

Meanwhile, Hannah Patricia Abril, the event chairperson, believed that integrity, courage, resilience, and empathy in the journalism field should start in school. She hopes that the invited speakers will inspire the participants to be responsible journalists.

The event will be participated in by various student publications in both secondary and tertiary levels nationwide. The resource speakers for the event are yet to be announced.
