Madrid speaks at seminar for history teachers

Dr. Randy M. Madrid, Graduate Program Coordinator of the Division of Professional Education, College of Arts and Science, University of the Philippines Visayas spoke at a Seminar for Philippine History Teachers in Negros held at University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City from September 7-8, 2024.

Spearheaded by the Alternatibong Tahanan ng mga Gawa at Nilikha (ATAGAN) and the Department of Social Sciences of the University of St. La Salle, the seminar aimed to train and equip Social Studies and History teachers in Negros with the basic skills in conducting historical research. The move is part of the preparatory activities in the eventual establishment of the Center for Negros Studies.

During the lecture, Dr. Madrid introduced and emphasized new methodologies in teaching history which focused on considering the changing concepts of time and space as important elements in historiographic discourse and conversation. Furthermore, he emphasized that in present historical writing, "temporariness" is very important to consider.

The talk also mentioned how physical, spatial, and symbolic spheres of knowledge production make the past relevant, useful, and usable to present realities and future possibilities.

Delegates from public and private schools and universities in Negros were part of the seminar. It was also joined by the descendants of Negros revolutionary heroes such as General Aniceto Lacson, who served as the president of the Negros Cantonal Republic on November 5, 1898, hence, the Cinco del Noviembre Revolution in Negros.
