As part of its calendar of activities for 2023, the UPV Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Committee organized a “Lecture-demonstration on Strength Training” on November 15, 2023 at the UPV Covered Court, Miagao campus.
The event featured Vincent Jaye Soropia, a Certified Personal Trainer of the International Sports Sciences Association. He specializes in bodybuilding, strength and conditioning, and is also a certified nutritionist.
Addressing an audience made up of office workers, maintenance personnel of the Campus Development Maintenance Office and PE students, Soropia stressed the importance of strength training to maintain bone density and muscles mass that decreases as we age.
“Strength training is one, sure-fire way wherein we can still be strong, fit, and healthy as we age,” he emphasized.”
He also demonstrated some exercises that office workers can do while at work such as wall push-ups and lunges which can serve as a break from sitting too long. He also shared that doing squats is one of the most basic strength trainings that we can do as these involves the major muscle groups. “You can add weights as you get stronger,” he added.
Lastly, he also encouraged healthy eating to be paired with strength training especially an increase in protein intake, but not to leave out fruits and vegetables and to choose a more fiber rich source of carbohydrates. He added that foregoing smoking and moderating alcohol consumption if one cannot give it up, goes a long way in helping us achieve optimum health.
The UPV Healthy Lifestyle and Wellness Committee continuously organizes lectures and activities that promote the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle for the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of the UPV employees.
