Ilongga artists’ works featured in exhibit

Two internationally respected Ilongga artists, Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi and Nelfa Querubin, are featured in an exhibition of their original prints in UP Visayas titled CONTRADISTINCTION.

Gelvezon-Tequi (b. 1944) is from Guimbal while Querubin (b.1941) hails from Concepcion.

Both women have illustrious careers in the visual arts. Both won the Cultural Center of the Philippines 13 Artists Awards in their younger days and have continued to reap international honors in the new millennium.

Gelvezon-Tequi is known primarily for her viscosity-etching prints but she also paints and dabbles in pottery. Querubin may now be famous as a ceramist, but had also done considerable original prints which won prizes in local and international print competitions. She also paints.

Contradistinction unveils two types of womanhood contained in the two artists’ works.

CONTRADISTINCTION, curated by Martin Genodepa, is a project of the UPV Chancellor’s Committee on Culture and the Arts and the UPV Gender Development Program in celebration of the National Women’s Month. It opened on 15 March and ran until the 29th at the Lobby of the GCE Building (GCEB), UP Visayas, Iloilo City campus.
