Out of 47 participants coming from a total of 13 student chapters of the Philippine Association of Food Technologists (PAFT), two out of four national quiz bowl champions hail from the University of the Philippines Visayas School of Technology (UPV SOTECH) in the person of Aleana Loraine Esmeralda and Leah Christine Mae Dela Rosa.
They will represent the Philippines in the Food Quiz Bowl on October 25 as one of the activities during the ASEAN Food Conference which will take place in Borneo Convention Centre, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, on October 24-27, 2023. The said students will compete against various student representatives across the ASEAN region. Furthermore, Esmeralda and Dela Rosa will be joined by students from PAFT Gamma (De La Salle Araneta) and PAFT Beta (UP Los Baños) to represent the country in the prestigious competition.
Along with them who represented the PAFT - Iota Chapter in the National Quiz Bowl competition were Nicole Marie Recate who landed a spot in the top 10 and Radelle Balad-on— all of whom are fourth-year BS in Food Technology students from UPV SOTECH.
The group was headed and reviewed by their co-adviser, Ms. Mary Denize Celine Portal, PAFT-i's adviser, Dr. Jihan Santanina S. Alumbro, and SOTECH Lecturer Dr. S.R. Luzette Teruel. This feat is another manifestation of how the School of Technology is committed to producing world-class students who bring forth honor and excellence beyond the halls of the University.
