Empowerment comes in many forms

Information and Publications Office (IPO) Director and UPV faculty member, Julie Prescott, reiterated in an interview with Bombo Radyo Iloilo on March 14 that being empowered can have different meanings to different women.

“Being empowered means so many different things for so many different women. And there isn’t one way to be empowered. For some women, being empowered is being influential and speaking out,” she said.

Nida Elmedorial, a campus missionary at Every Nation Ministries, joined Prescott as they talked about their experiences as educators and their views on women empowerment on Bombo Radyo’s Good Morning Philippines. Elmedorial also shared that women are free to commit mistakes and fail as they strive for success.

Prescott added, “For some women, being empowered means just simply knowing who they are and knowing themselves, inside out. For others, in order to be empowered, they need to know that they are more than just what a man needs. For some who struggle with domestic abuse, empowerment for them is the realization that they can walk away and they deserve better or ask for help if they need to.”

As an educator, Prescott said that it becomes fulfilling when students apply what they learned in class as they go out of the university, because influence is far more empowering. You do not have to be in positions of power in order to be empowered.

“Having the influence to change people’s ideas; to make people more courageous is actually a very powerful thing,” she said.
