Today, 18 December 2024, the Iloilo City government honored Ilonggo propagandist and national hero, Graciano Lopez Jaena.
Born and raised in Iloilo City, Lopez Jaena was the founder and the first editor of La Solidaridad, the official newspaper of Filipino reformers in Spain. He became instrumental in the propaganda campaign that eventually influenced the Philippine Revolution of 1896.
The program started with a flag raising ceremony followed by wreath laying and volley firing. Executive Assistant to the Mayor, Mr. Jay Treñas represented Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, gave the opening message and highlighted the importance of honoring the esteemed Ilonggo.
CWVS Director Frances Anthea R. Redison serve as Guest Speaker. Her talk revisited the crucial role of Graciano in the propaganda movement and his contribution to the national cause. She also emphasized Lopez Jaena’s intellectual prowess and political connections. Further, Redison underscored the continuing relevance of Graciano’s crusade of fighting for social justice and true independence from the shackles of poverty. Adiditionaly, she also called for collective initiatives from various stakeholders to popularize the life and works of the national hero.
