The UP Visayas Chemical Engineering student delegates won awards in the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) National Student Congress 2019 held on February 26, 2019 at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall, De La Salle University, Manila.
The group, composed of Joyjane L. Borres, Jeraldine D. Calangi, and Ma. Kathleen Pearl F. Grande, with their adviser Dr. Dennis C. Ong, placed 2nd in the Undergraduate Research Contest for the study entitled, "Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solution via Fenton Process using Iron-impregnated Bamboo Biochar."
The Best Poster award was bagged by the group composed of John Salvador Y. Ricacho, Ryan Lee G. Ronquillo, and Adolfo Arthuraphael James L. Salise, with their adviser Engr. Francis Eric P. Almaquer, for the study entitled, "Simple and Rapid Colorimetric Sensing of Nickel in Tap Water based on Aggregation of Citrate-stabilized Silver Nanoparticles."
The two UPV entries were among the Top 6 finalists of the Poster Exhibit round held in the morning, along with three entries from UP Diliman and one from Batangas State University. The selected finalists advanced to the Final Presentation round held in the afternoon where the students did an oral presentation of their research studies.
The Student Congress also featured the PIChE National Quiz Bowl 2019 participated in by delegates from various public and private universities.
The National Student Congress 2019 was organized by the PIChE Metro Manila Academe Chapter with the goal of “bringing together Chemical Engineering students from all over the country towards excellence in scholastic and research pursuit in the form of intercollegiate competitions.” (With sources from the School of Technology)
