CFOS welcomes new, continuing students; recognizes honorific scholars

To welcome the new and continuing students to the new academic year, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) held an Opening Exercises for AY 2023-2024 at the AV Hall, Pidlaoan Building, UP Visayas, Miagao on August 24, 2023.

In her welcome message, CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap shared with the students the evolution of the fisheries education in the Philippines and that of CFOS highlighting the significant events that shaped it into what it is today. 

Yap reported the initiatives that CFOS has been doing and is presently working on in response to the current demands and trends in the Philippines’s fisheries industry.

She also underscored the accomplishments of CFOS over the years that have brought honor to UP Visayas. These include the College’s performance in the fisheries  professional board examinations; the AUN-QA accreditation of the BS Fisheries program which is the first in UPV and 15th out of the 256 programs in the entire UP System; ranks 10th out of the 276 units in the UP System; and the recently acquired patent for microalgae paste developed by Ms. Soledad S. Garibay, which is also the first patent for UPV.

The dean said that given these recent achievements, “we are working on and aiming for the declaration of CFOS as the National College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.” 

CFOS officials, faculty members, REPS, and administrative personnel were introduced to the students. An audio visual presentation about CFOS was also presented as well as the different institutes, units, and student organizations and batches.

Wesley Callagon and Chloe Ann Dulos, first year and fourth year students, respectively, gave messages on behalf of their peers. 

Meanwhile, during the Pagpasidungog, the College's annual recognition program held in conjunction with the opening exercises, the CFOS also recognized non-graduating BS Fisheries students who excel in their academic activities during the first and second semesters of AY 2022-2023.

Yap and CFOS college secretary Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liah C. Catedrilla presented the honorific scholars with the certificate of merit. 

In the first semester, there were 16 University Scholars and 76 College Scholars, while 30 and 78 students were named university and college scholars, respectively in the second semester. 

The activities were made possible through the Office of the College Secretary, CFOS in cooperation with the UPV College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences Student Council.
