CFOS personnel learn fish post-harvest processing

Personnel from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) learned how to process fish into deboned and smoked products.

The CFOS Gender and Development (CFOS-GAD) Committee chaired by Ms. Genna Serofia conducted a post-harvest training to 14 administrative staff and REPS of the College at the Seafood Processing Plant, CFOS, UP Visayas Miagao Campus on April 3, 2024.

CFOS Dean Prof. Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro lauded and underscored the importance of the activity that could provide income-earning opportunities to the participants especially to women members of the household.

Ms. Mercy Quilantang and Karmelie Jane Monaya, REPS of the Institute of Fisheries Processing Technology (IFPT), served as the trainers and resource persons.

Quilantang  and Monaya facilitated the hands-on training that focused  on milkfish deboning and smoking to equip the participants with the post-harvest skills that they could apply in daily life.

Prior to the hands-on activity, they gave lectures on good manufacturing practices in milkfish processing and fish deboning and smoking.

Of 14 participants, five were male. Two senior high school students from Igbaras National High School who are spending their work immersion at IFPT also participated in the activity.

The participants expressed their gratitude to CFOS-GAD committee for initiating the activity. They are looking forward to more skills training in the future.

Ma. Teresa Gabon, administrative officer of the Office of the Dean, said that she had a fun learning experience and thankful for the practical skills that will be useful in her everyday life.

Lei Marie Tes Paulma, on the other hand, said it was the first time for her to attend such training as mostly were related to human resource development. She said that they will no longer buy deboned bangus from the market, which is costly.

The training was in celebration of Women’s Month. The CFOS-GAD committee is contemplating to hold similar activity to accommodate personnel from other units of the University as well as conducting more training on fish processing technologies.
