The Institute of Fish Processing Technology, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS-IFPT) held a workshop on data analysis and manuscript preparation for studies related to post-harvest fisheries.
Conducted on August 22-24, 2022, in the Conference Room of Umali Hall, CFOS, UP Visayas (UPV) Miagao campus, the workshop aimed to enhance the capability of the students and researchers to analyze the data in order to improve the academic content of the graduate courses in IFPT that require data analysis. It will also assist them in presenting accurate and reliable data and guiding the participants in writing an effective manuscript for publication.
The activity likewise sought to encourage research productivity among the IFPT faculty members and research, extension, and professional staff (REPS).
Twenty-one (21) IFPT faculty members, REPS, and graduate students participated in the three-day event. They listened to six lectures and participated in three workshops.
Topics for the lectures were the following: (1) Tips and tricks for better data presentation by Asst. Prof. Rhoda Mae Simora, faculty member of IFPT; (2) Basic R Programming also by Simora, (3) Response Surface Methodology (RSM) by Asst. Prof. Dennis Ong, faculty member of the School of Technology, UPV, and (4) How to Write An Effective Discussion by IFPT director Assoc. Prof. Sharon Nuñal.
Special lectures in “Infectious bacterial pathogens affecting farmed tilapia in the Philippines: detection methods and food safety issues” and “Gene-edited fish: Is it safe to eat?” were presented by Asst. Prof. Francis Legario, faculty member and senior faculty researcher at the Iloilo Science and Technology University, Iloilo City campus, and Simora, respectively.
During the workshops, the participants applied the practical skills, techniques, and ideas in navigating the R software for data analysis and RSM, a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques, to analyze problems. Additionally, they composed the discussion while taking into account all the pertinent data required to create a manuscript that would allow their research to become part of the “body of knowledge.”
A graduate student participant, Ms. Reyna Fe Quilantang, expressed how the workshop enriched her knowledge in data analysis and writing an effective manuscript.
Taking up MS in Fisheries –Fish Processing Technology, Quilantang said, “having this type of workshop enhanced and enriched our capacity to make quality papers that can be competitive and up-to-date in terms of formatting, structures, and designs. Being in the same workshop with our very own seasoned researchers and mentors was an honor and a huge learning experience.”
She said the challenge for them is how they can apply what they have learned to their own research projects in order to develop more outputs and outcomes that could be both beneficial to them and to the people. (With sources from IFPT)
