CFOS dean Yap to judge 2021 ASEAN-FEN Outstanding Young Scientist

Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap, dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), is one of the judges to evaluate the nominees to the 2021 Outstanding Young Fisheries Scientist Award of the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN), a university-based consortium of fisheries and aquaculture oriented institutions in the Southeast Asian region.

Representing UP Visayas, Yap was one of 48 deans, and representatives from the 36 institutional members of ASEAN FEN from the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, and China who participated in the annual ASEAN FEN Dean’s Council Meeting held online last June 9.

UPV, through the CFOS, is one of the associate institutional members of ASEAN FEN. It aims to enhance the fisheries and aquaculture sector through education, research, and public outreach in the region.

The 2021 Outstanding Young Fisheries Scientist Award is one of the important matters discussed at the meeting. The award program recognizes and acknowledges the significant contributions of young scientists in fisheries and aquaculture from Southeast Asia.  Nomination is open to all eligible candidates from the institutional members.  The call for nomination will be announced later.

Other members of the judges are the ASEAN-FEN advisors, namely Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sukree Hajisamae, Prof. Dr. Mazlan Abd. Graffar, and Prof. Dr. Happy Nursyam.

The awardees will be honored at this year’s International Fisheries Symposium, an annual academic symposium to be held virtually in December 2021.  The full online IFS2021 will be organized by three (3) universities from Vietnam: Nha Trang University, Can Tho University, and Nong Lam University.

CFOS has been actively participating in various programs and activities of ASEAN FEN.

Yap was one of the judges for Postharvest, Fish Product, and Food Safety poster session of 2019 IFS held at Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on November 18-21, 2019.

Last year, Assoc. Prof. Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols, faculty member of the Institute of Aquaculture, CFOS, was one of the 26 featured speakers from nine (9) countries in the 2020 ASEAN-FEN webinar.

The College also participated and presented papers and posters in the IFS every year and has won awards as Best Oral and Best Poster presentations.
