The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) conducted an orientation on UPV research ethics guidelines and policies for its constituents via Zoom on August 31, 2021.
Faculty members, researchers, staff, and students of CFOS participated in the virtual activity.
CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap said the orientation served as a venue for the participants to know more about the guidelines and protocols of the University on the conduct of ethical research and the process of ethics review of research programs and projects.
“As a college with strong and well-defined research thrust direction, the orientation is important so that we will know if we are not violating anything and we are doing things the way they should be done,” the dean emphasized.
Prof. Cristabel Rose F. Parcon, the chairperson of the UPV Research Ethics Board (UPVREB), was the resource person. Parcon walked the participants through the approved guidelines, policies, and procedures of the UPVREB.
The UPVREB operates under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE). It was created to ensure the “ethical conduct of researches by students, faculty, and staff involving human participants.”
Parcon said that Chancellor Clement C. Camposano approved the policies and guidelines to make sure that the conduct of research adheres to the following principles: social value; respect of person; protection of vulnerable populations; risks, benefits and safety; privacy and confidentiality of information, social justice; and transparency and integrity.
Yap reported that the CFOS produced 47 completed researches and utility models and copyrighted materials from 2018~2020. It has a combined 75 scientific articles published in international and local journals for the same period. The dean also noted that every faculty member in the College has at least one publication.
