CAS Dean nominees present vision papers

The two nominees for the next Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV-CAS) presented their respective vision papers to the personnel and students of CAS at the CFOS AV Hall on March 8.

The two nominees are Dr. Rommel Gestuveo and Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Jr., faculty members from the Division of Biological Sciences and the Division of Social Sciences, respectively.

Gestuveo emphasized a revitalized CAS that is energetic, dynamic, and youthful, anchored on collaborative consciousness, academic quality assurance, and strengthened support to the students and the staff.

Specifically, Gestuveo’s initiatives include revisiting inter- and multi-disciplinary research groups and agenda; promoting and involving service-learning in CAS’ teachings; promoting quality assurance practices and curricular review; institutional support on quality assurance assessments and grants; consulting students and staff on actual needs; and internal review and accounting of maintaining expenses, among others.

Meanwhile, Fernandez’s vision is to build a CAS that strengthens knowledge production, nurtures its students and personnel, and utilizes and shares its capabilities and resources to strengthen collaboration with partners.

His vision includes requesting and vying for more plantilla items for personnel; investing in recruiting and retaining the best faculty and staff; undertaking activities to assess the wellness and well-being issues and concerns of students and personnel and providing professional learning and training for support; building new and strengthening existing partnerships in teaching, research, and public service; and initiating programs to further strengthen engagement with CAS alumni.

In the afternoon, the Search Committee met with the staff and the representatives of the CAS Student Council and various student organizations to allow them to separately discuss their concerns.

Atty. King Anthony Perez of UP Cebu, the Chair of the said committee, led the consultations. Atty. Abraham Rey Acosta, UP VP for Legal Affairs, was present on behalf of the UP Office of the President.

The committee will also meet with CAS faculty members at the Miagao campus and Iloilo City campus-based sectors at the Iloilo City campus on March 12. The nominees are scheduled to be interviewed on March 13.
