Hubon Manunulat, in cooperation with the Division of Humanities of University of the Philippines Visayas, will hold the first Leoncio P. Deriada Conference on Literature and Cultural Work on April 19, 2024 at the UPV Cinematheque, Iloilo City Campus, in celebration of its tenth anniversary. The conference aims to highlight the noteworthy contributions on a national scale of Leoncio P. Deriada in the fields of creative writing, literary criticism, and cultural work. Known as the Father of Contemporary West Visayan Literature, Deriada has influenced writers not only from/in West Visayas but also beyond it, particularly through his cultural and critical work, as seen in his Home Life literary column, whose publications and annual literary contests featured now well-respected writers such as German Gervacio from Mindanao and Michael Coroza from Luzon, aside from John Iremil Teodoro from Visayas, among others.
The theme of the conference is “Leoncio P. Deriada: Literary Artist, Critic, and Cultural Worker for the Filipino Nation.” The conference welcomes submissions from literary critics and scholars on this conference theme.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
1. Abstracts of 250 to 350 words must be submitted to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., with a short cover letter or email message addressed to Dulce Maria V. Deriada, President, Hubon Manunulat. The subject line of the email should read: DERIADA CONFERENCE (Author's Surname)
2. The cover letter must also indicate the title of the proposed paper, the proponent’s name, institutional affiliation, and email address, along with a one-paragraph bionote.
3. Abstracts and papers must be written in either English or Tagalog/Filipino, double-spaced, using font size 12 Times New Roman. The MLA style must be used. For the full paper, the word count should range from 4000 to 5000 words, excluding notes and references. The oral presentation of the paper must be limited to twenty to thirty minutes.
4. Deadline for the submission of abstracts is February 15, 2024. Authors of selected abstracts will be informed by email on February 23, 2024. They are expected to submit their full paper by April 8, 2024.
