The University of the Philippines, through the Information Technology Development Center (ITDC), will be exploring alternative video conferencing tools this July as Zoom will be limiting meetings among the UP community to 45 minutes only instead of 24-hour meeting durations starting July 9.
The limitation in Zoom meeting durations from 24 hours to 45 minutes is an outcome of the public bidding held last June 13, 2023, in which Zoom, through its Philippine resellers, did not participate. Only one bidder participated in the public bidding and proposed the Webex video conferencing tool. However, said bidder fell short in its tender as it did not meet the required number of licenses.
For UP users who need to host online meetings, the ITDC recommends using various alternative video conferencing tools, all available and free. These include:
1. Google Meet (with a maximum meeting duration of 24 hours)
2. MS Teams (with a maximum meeting duration of 24 hours)
3. Webex (with a maximum meeting duration of 40 minutes)
UP will increase the number of video conferencing tools in the coming days and will release appropriate announcements regarding the availability of these additional tools.
