About the Division
The Division of Biological Sciences is a constituent academic unit of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of the Philippines Visayas. The Division offers 2 undergraduate programs - (1) BS in Biology and (2) BS in Public Health and 1 graduate program - MS in Biology.
The Division is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the natural world through research, education, and public service. As one of the premier institutions for biological sciences in the country, the Division is committed to excellence in every aspect of our mission, from conducting research to training the next generation of scientists and public health practitioners.

Vision and Mission
VISION
To be the center of excellence in biology, marine science, and public health in the Visayas at par with the best in the country.
MISSION
- To train independent, innovative, critical thinkers in biology, including marine science, and public health education and research;
- To develop globally competitive biologists and public health practitioners proficient in basic and applied natural and health sciences; and,
- To produce graduates with a strong sense of nationalism and commitment to public service, particularly in conserving local and national biodiversity and improving coastal/rural health outcomes.

Objectives

Biodiversity as a Legacy
Taklong Island National Marine Reserve (TINMR) has high biodiversity which needs protection for future generations to see, learn from and enjoy.
UPV studies in TINMR, have documented over 107 species in 50 genera of reef building corals, 16 species in 13 genera of soft corals, 26 species of true mangroves, 9 species of seagrasses and 77 species of macroalgae. Ongoing biodiversity studies in this marine protected area and in other parts of Guimaras continue to generate exciting species discoveries and relevant science-based information for formulating sustainable policies or support decisions in marine resource management and utilization.
