Learning Resource Center, Miagao, Iloilo. The Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (DPSM) Statistics Cluster conducted an Academic Program Improvement (API) Workshop which was participated in by faculty members of the BS Statistics program with the aim of improving the proposal for the revision of the BS Statistics curriculum to conform with the new GE framework and AUN standards.
Dr. Ernel B. Barrios served as a resource person for the activity. He is a Professor of Statistics at UP Diliman and formerly the Dean of the UP School of Statistics. During his deanship, the School was accredited by ASEAN University Network – Quality Assessment (AUN-QA), and became the only Center of Excellence for Statistics in the Philippines.
The activity was steered by Dr. Barrios by sharing the different aspects of implementing the AUN Standards in the BS Statistics curriculum. Moreover, he guided the faculty members during the 2-day workshop that revolved on the following topics: Workshop 1 - Formulation and review of the background, rationale, goals, and outcomes of the program; Workshop 2 - Revision of study plan; Workshop 3 - Justification for courses to be instituted, revised and deleted; and Workshop 4 - Finalization of the proposal for the revision of the UPV BS Statistics program curriculum.
Tacloban City. The University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC) marked its 41st Commencement Exercises on June 27, 2017 at the UPVTC Arts and Sciences Grounds. The 277 graduates of Class 2017 were led by Kimberly D. Caimbre, BA (Social Sciences) Political Science and Alexis Eugen Castor who both graduated magna cum laude. There were 53 other honor graduates.
UPVTC class 2017 produced 30 graduates of BS in Accountancy, 77 graduates of BS in Management, 28 graduates of BA Communication Arts, 40 graduates of BS Biology, 10 graduates of BS in Computer Science, 33 graduates of BA Psychology, 22 graduates of BA (Social Sciences) Economics, 28 graduates of BA (Social Sciences) Political Science, two graduates of BA (Social Sciences) Psychology, and seven graduates of Master of Management.
Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevarra, Undersecretary for Science and Technological Services of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was this year’s commencement exercises speaker. Her message was read by Engr. Edgardo Esperancilla, Regional Director of DOST Region VIII.

The Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS) conducted an information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign for the sustainable management and operation of the newly established marine protected area (MPA) on May 5 and May 13, 2017 at Brgy. Damilisan, Miagao, Iloilo.
The campaign sought to improve the community participation, disseminate information, and increase the level of awareness of the community on the importance and conservation of the MPA, prohibited activities and respective penalties through the conduct of the forum on May 5.
Faculty members of the IFPDS, namely Prof. Caridad N. Jimenez, Prof. Liberty N. Espectato, and Prof. Joshua Regalado served as the resource persons for technical information related to the marine sanctuary. The said MPA served as the learning site of the graduate students of the Master of Science Affairs of IFPDS this trimester. MMA students Kristine Bundal and Emy Mooc presented to the community their data from the biophysical assessment and focus group discussions. Four (4) tarpaulin signages on the prohibited activities as provided by the municipal ordinance in protecting the sanctuary were donated to the Barangay Council on May 13, 2017. These signages were translated in the local dialect.
