Prof. Alice Joan G. Ferrer, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) and the Executive Director of the National Consortium for Small-Scale Fisheries Research and Development or Too-Big-To-Ignore Philippines, was invited as one of the resource speakers of the back-to-back activities of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from 12-15 March, 2024 in Quezon City.
The “National Consultation Workshop for the Implementation of the sub-component 1.3 (Strengthening Management of Coastal Resources in Municipal Waters) Deliverable” last 12-14 March 2024 was organized by the DA-BFAR-FISHCORE. The consultation workshop solicited relevant information to fast-track project deliverables under FishCRMM.
VCAA Ferrer discussed the “Socio-anthropology Aspect in Community Participation in Fishery Law Enforcement and Conservation”. Joining VCAA Ferrer as resource speakers were independent consultants, professors and researchers from the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), Philippines Space Agency (PhilSA), University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI), University of the Philippines Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea (UP IMLOS), and focal persons from BFAR.
Meanwhile, VCAA Ferrer was also the resource person during the online symposium last March 15, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM via Zoom and FB LIVE stream in celebration of National Women’s Month. This emphasized gender equality and women empowerment, highlighting the huge contribution of women in fisheries resource management. VCAA Ferrer talked about the “Women in Small-Scale Fisheries in the Philippines.” This was well attended by participants from the academe, national government agencies, and non-government organizations.
