CFOS conducts forum on UP regulations and policies, scholarships anew

The UP Visayas College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) reacquainted its students with UP policies and regulations on February 28, 2024 at the Audio Visual Hall, CFOS, UPV Miagao campus.

The activity is designed to refresh the students on policies and regulations pertaining to academics, teaching and learning, student discipline, and well-being in the University.

Addressing the students, CFOS dean Prof. Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro underscored the significance of the activity in ensuring quality assurance in its academic processes.

CFOS College Secretary Asst. Prof. Lhument Tejano, Atty. Scarlette Joy N. Coopera of the Office of the Chancellor, Ms. Maritess Geonanga of the Office of Student Affairs, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Iris Ann G. Borlongan of CFOS delivered talks on various topics.

Tejano familiarized the students with UPV academic policies on registration, waiver of pre-requisite, cross-registration, change of matriculation, attendance, dropping of course, leave of absence, waiver of maximum residency rule (MRR), completion of INC, scholastic delinquency, and honorific scholars, among others.

Coopera talked about plagiarism, use of artificial intelligence (AI), and the penalties under RA 10175 also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

“AI is a tool. Like any other tool, it should be cautiously, responsibly, and ethically used to aid us in our pursuits and not to replace us,” she stressed.

Meanwhile, Geonanga, scholarship affairs officer, shared the various scholarships and financial assistance programs of the University that are available for the students.

She emphasized that interested students should apply through the Student Learning Assistance System (SLAS) online, a web-based application platform for those who wish to avail the financial program of the University.

Borlongan, on the other hand, introduced the Olmix Philippines, Inc.  Awards for CFOS valedictorian and best thesis on seaweed research for graduating students for AY 2023-2024.

“We hope that these awards will motivate you to do research on seaweeds and do well in your academics,” said Borlongan.

A town hall meeting was conducted after the talk. Monteclaro was joined by the resource speakers and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols, director of the Institute of Aquaculture to answer queries raised by the students on various issues.

Monteclaro told the students that the Office of the Dean and Directors of the different institutes under CFOS are open for discussions. He encouraged the students to visit his office anytime, no appointment required, for any concerns.

The activity was organized by the CFOS Student Council.

Last October 12, 2023, the CFOS, through the Quality Assurance Office, held the first refresher on the UPV academic guidelines and policies, and rules and regulations on student conduct and discipline.
