The University of the Philippines held the Investiture of its 21st President, Atty. Danilo Lardizabal Concepcion on September 20, 2017 at the Univeristy Theater, UP Diliman Quezon City.
Pres. Concepcion is a professor and dean of the UP College of Law. He graduated summa cum laude in Agricultural Engineering at the Gregorio Araneta University Foundation (now De la Salle – Araneta University) in 1979 and topped the board examinations that same year. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (cum laude) from the UP College of Law in 1983 and his Master of Laws from the University of London, Queen Mary College in 1986.
Concepcion sees the University of the Philippines embracing its role as the national university, serving its various constituencies and the Filipino people by producing world-class education, research, and public service – upholding honor and excellence with compassion.
The Investiture of the 21st UP President was presided by CHED Chair Patricia Licuanan. The event was attended by Vice Pres. Maria Leonora Robredo, Department Secretaries, Members of Congress, Heads of Universities here and abroad, Representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, former UP Presidents, former UP Regents, University Officials, his family members and the UP faculty, staff and students.
Concepcion is married to Atty. Gaby Roldan–Concepcion, with whom he has four children. (With sources from the UP System Investiture Program)
Mr. Clyde Gacayan, a junior faculty of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences of UP Visayas was given the Best Paper Award by the Association of Pacific Rim during the recently concluded 13th APRU Multi Hazards Symposium on August 28-29, 2017 at Peking University, Beijing China.
The said symposium is an annual gathering of disaster scholars from member universities around the Pacific Ocean.
Gacayan’s paper entitled ‘Disaster Vulnerabilities and Cultural Resilience: Transforming Schools for Living Traditions as Disaster Hubs’ was based from his NCIP-FPIC ethnographic fieldwork in the Panay Bukidnon communities affected by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. The paper has been published as part of the APRU Multi Hazards Symposium Conference Proceedings on Innovative Association of Academia and Governance for Disaster Risk Reduction by Peking University.
Additionally, Mr. Gacayan also served as chair to the panel on disaster technology application on the same conference. Gacayan is currently on a study leave pursuing MA in Global Politics at the Ateneo de Manila University as a K+12 CHED Scholar. Dr. Rex Ferdinand Traifalgar was one of the featured speakers during the Research and Development (R&D), Financing and Export Marketing Forum for the Dried Mango, Processed Shrimp and Carrageenan Industries on 29-30 August 2017 held in Cebu City.
Traifalgar, the current Director of the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, discussed about Immunostimulation and Probiotics as Practical Strategies in the management of White Spot Syndrome Virus Disease and Vibriosis in Shrimp Aquaculture.
The forum was organized by the Board of Investments, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-BOI).
Prof. Pierce S. Docena, UPV Tacloban College Division of Social Sciences Chair, once again served as resource person for the sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE) Seminar for the National Service Training Program (NSTP) students of the National State University on September 16, 2017 held at the NSU Gymnasium in Naval, Biliran, Leyte. This was done after a successful partnership with NSU’s Gender and Development (GAD) Office in running a seminar on SOGIE for selected employees and student leaders last September 2016.
The event was attended by about 200 first year students from the various programs of NSU’s College of Engineering and College of Industrial, Information and Communication Technology, and Tourism.
