UPV offers MS Food Science starting 1st Semester 2019-2020

UP Visayas is now offering the MS Food Science starting this 1st semester, academic year 2019-2020. This new program is being hosted by the School of Technology.

In its 1346th meeting on July 31, 2019 the UP Board of Regents has approved the adoption of the core curriculum of the MS Food Science Program of UP Los Banos in the conduct of this program in UPV. Select courses in fisheries, management, chemistry and microbiology were included as additional fields of study to allow flexibility among students in developing advance knowledge and expertise in food science and technology.

The Master of Science in Food Science is designed for people with a background and / or bachelor’s degree in Food Technology and the allied fields such as chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, agriculture, nutrition, and fisheries.  The program intends to develop a critical mass of leaders, teachers, researchers, and extension workers in Food Science and Technology apart from generation of knowledge through research. The robust agri-aqua produce will be the resource material for in depth study on efficient handling, distribution, processing, quality and safety assurance and utilization. Similarly, focal persons in the food industry and government agencies may find apt recommendation or information for   policies formulation for the food sector.

There is a global demand for more professional food technologist hence Higher Education Institution and SUCs will offer the 4-year BS Food Technology program that is compliant to the CHED CMO no 45 series of 2006. And the Regional Development Council VI in its Resolution No. 79 series of 2017 emphasized the need to increase the number of competent practitioners to fill the gap brought about by significant increase in food manufacturing establishments in the region together with the consumer demand for safe and quality food products.

UPV is offering support to   the capacity building requirement and as a fulfilment of UP’s mandate to “lead in setting academic standards and initiating innovations in teaching, research, and faculty development…by providing advanced studies and specialization for scholars, scientists, writers, artists, and professionals especially those who serve on the faculty of state and private colleges and universities” (The UP Charter of 2008). UPV is taking active part in the socio-economic progress of the region and of the nation.
