TLRC enriches teaching, learning environment

On its 22nd Anniversary celebration held on May 2-3, 2019, TLRC organized various programs and activities to promote a proactive and nurturing academic environment.

With the theme, “enriching the teaching and learning environment in UPV”, the two-day celebration consisted of the following activities: Telex, creative movement exercises; Telebug, an intimate forum on understanding mental health issues in the classroom for faculty members; Telempics, a tournament utilizing the office’s interactive learning materials; SineAral, educational film showing; and demonstration of PlagScan and Science Direct teaching and learning apps in partnership with digital technology company CE-Logic.

Also included in the activities was the launch of TLRC programs namely, the Sponsor-a-tutee Program and WOOT (Work-it-Out).

Physical fitness

The two-day event started with Telex: a lecture-demo that introduced creative movement exercises that the teachers, staff and students can perform in their respective offices and classrooms. This was handled by Prof. Jocelyn Pacheco, a member of the faculty of the Department of Physical Education. She stressed the importance of engaging in movement activities, that which is often taken for granted given the long hours of sitting in offices and listening to lectures.

Focus on mental health

To address some mental health concerns in the classroom. TLRC organized Telebug with Dr. Daisy Daquilanea, head of the Psychiatric Department of Western Visayas Medical Center as the resource speaker.

Among those who participated in the intimate roundtable discussion were faculty members who shared their experiences and some of their difficulties in coping with students with mental health issues.

Also present were guidance specialists from the Guidance Services Unit of the Office of Students Affairs who shared their insights on the overall mental health status of the students of the university.

Dr. Daquillanea focused her talk on common signs of mental health concerns that teachers need to pay attention to, how to spot them inside these in the classroom, how to deal with students’ change in behavioral patterns, and the factors that affect emotional and psychosocial wellness of millenials, referring to the students.

Dr. Daquilanea discussed the hormonal changes in the body and how these changes in the body can cause a person to suffer from mental instability.

Patience, understanding, and communication were among the recommended steps on how to create a safer and more enriching environment for the students.

Successful as it was, the participants hope that similar activities be organized for members of the faculty, staff and students.

Promoting Peer to peer learning

Peer tutorial has been one of the primary programs of the TLRC. This year, TLRC strengthens its Peer Tutorial Program by giving incentives to peer tutors through the Sponsor-a-tutee Program. While students can request for tutorial services for free, the volunteer but carefully-chosen student tutees are now paid for every hour of tutorial service to their fellow students.

On Learning Commons

TLRC has also announced the learning spaces available for the students and the members of the faculty: the Iskonita, Acaden and Estudiyo. The Acaden is a space allotted for tutorial, and computer use. Iskonita is a learning space for individual and/or group study and discussion. And, Estudiyo is a learning space for educational movie screenings, class presentations, and other academic activities.

The concept of learning space also paved way to the creation of the WOOT (WOrk-it-Out) Hub, designed to encourage a more creative form of learning such as building materials, creative projects and productive tinkering.

The Woot Hub hopes to provide working space for students who would want to design, create and design academic and do-it-yourself projects.

TLRC provides services, creates programs, and organizes psychosocial and learning activities in hopes for students and faculty to have a more enriched teaching and productive learning experience.
