Disaster preparedness of indigenous areas in Tubungan addressed in workshop

A training workshop on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CBDRRM) for 10 Barangays of Tubungan, Iloilo with Indigenous Peoples/Indigenous Cultural Communities (IPs/ICCs) was organized by Indigenous Peoples Resource Center (IPRC) of UP Visayas.

Conducted on February 28 – March 2, 2019 at Racso’s Woodland Resort in Guimbal, Iloilo, the activity aims to address the institutional capacity and individual competency gaps of stakeholders in these IP areas. It was also to raise the awareness and competencies of decision makers and community key-players on disaster risk reduction and management and climate change adaptation.

The CBDRRM capacity building for local DRRM stakeholders is a vital mandate of RA 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.

CBDRRM is one of the activities under the project, “Enhancement of the Indigenous Peoples Resource Center in UP Visayas.”

Mr. Edlin Lumanog, a community development worker who was connected with various international non-government organizations and agencies and Professor Jorge Ebay, an expert and consultant in the field of CBDRRM led the discussions on the urgency of developing the capacities of community-based stakeholders involved in building skills for disaster preparedness and disaster avoidance.

Participants in the workshop included Punong Barangays, IP chieftains, Barangay Kagawads, SK Chairpersons, School Representatives, Barangay Secretaries, and Barangay Service Point Officers. The 10 barangays of Tubungan are Bagonanay, Bantayanan, Bato, Boloc, Igdampog Norte, Igdampog Sur, Igpajo, Igtuble, Molina and Victoria.

Under the watch of the CWVS, the IPRC is a resources services center for IPs/ICCs, in partnership with scholars, government, non-government and development institutions, in documentation, information databasing, community organizing, and capacity building to improve resilience and adaptive capacities, including health systems, maternal and child care, food security, sustainable livelihoods and governance. The center was established in 2014 with funding support from the Office of Senator Loren Legarda.
