CFOS Dean Yap heads UPV delegation to the 2018 IFS in Thailand

Dean Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas led the delegation of the University in the recently concluded 8th International Fisheries Symposium (IFS) in HatYai, Thailand on November 18-21, 2018.

Yap was an invited speaker and session chair for postharvest, fish products and food safety session at the 2018 IFS organized by the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN).

Yap’s invited paper entitled “Mapping out the value chain for improved quality and safety of Philippine sardine products,” was the opening presentation in the Session 7: Postharvest, Fish Products and Food Safety of the conference.

The paper discussed problems and measures related to food quality and safety that are essential to help improve the sardine industry in the Philippines.

Yap also represented UPV-CFOS in the Dean’s Council Meeting of the ASEAN-FEN.

The symposium was an opportunity for her to network with other universities in line with the internationalization initiative of the University.

UPV has 18 delegations who presented their research outputs through oral and poster presentations at the symposium. Fifteen (15) were from the CFOS and three (3) from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Among those who participated from the CFOS were Prof. Sharon N. Nuñal , Prof. Jose P. Peralta, Prof. Loda M. Nacional, Ms. May Flor S. Muege and Ms. Ernestina Peralta of the Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT); Prof. Sheila Mae S. de Leon, Mr. Dominique P. Mediodia, and Ms. Yrla Mey P. Santander of the Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO); three (3) graduate students and three (3) project researchers.

IFS is an annual event organized by the ASEAN-FEN as a major platform to gather stakeholders in fisheries and aquaculture. This year's theme was "Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture for the Benefits of Mankind."
