“The impact of social media transcends almost every aspect of our daily lives. Posting a photo in Instagram and liking statuses in Facebook had become part of one’s daily routine just like brushing your teeth…The ease with which digital content can be shared online in addition to its many benefits, has created a host of problems for today’s generation...” So says Engr. John Lorenz Belanio, faculty member of the UPV College of Management, during the Lecture-Forum on the Responsible Use of Social Media. He advised about keeping oneself safe online and being responsible social media users.
Atty. Nellie Jo Regalado, Legal Officer of UP Visayas, informed of the Art. 19. of the Civil Code that says that “Every person must, in the exercise of his rights and in the performance of his duties, act with justice, give everyone his due, and observe honesty and good faith.” She also discussed numerous other laws that can implicate those that use social media platforms foolishly and irresponsibly. She emphasized that freedom of expression may not be availed of to peddle lies or half-truths, insult others, destroy the reputation of others, and broadcast fake news online.
The lecture-forum was held on November 22, 2018 at the UPV Auditorium and was attended by students of the UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI). The activity was sponsored by the Information and Publications Office in coordination with UPHSI, Office of Student Affairs and the Junior Peer Facilitators.
