Department of Chemistry hosted 18th PSBMB RevUP
The Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas together with Philippine Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PSBMB) hosted the 18th Review and Updates (RevUP) on biochemistry and molecular biology at GCE Building, UP Visayas Iloilo City on September 27-28, 2018. The activity was aimed at updating the participants with knowledge on current technology and techniques applied in biochemistry and molecular biology.
The 2-day RevUp was participated in by faculty members, staff and researchers from the different State Colleges and Universities within the region.
Resource speakers from UP Diliman and Bayer were invited to share their expertise in different fields. Dr. Eloise Priero spoke on biomolecules. Dr. Pia Bagamasbad discussed genetic engineering and its applications. Dr. Gabriel Romero talked about plant breeding innovations while Dr. Ian Fontanilla tackled genomics and bioinformatics.
Aside from listening to lectures, participants also took part in the hands-on activities conducted such as in DNA extraction (using household materials), DNA profiling and engineering plasmids (paper activity analysis), and in the use of bioinformatics.
The 18th RevUP served as a preparatory activity for the incoming PSBMB National Convention slated on November 28-29, 2018 at the Grand Xing Hotel and Convention Center, Iloilo City. The UPV Department of Chemistry will be serving as the local organizing committee for the event.
