CFOS reaches out to other SUCs

Being at the forefront of fisheries education in the country, the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas, is reaching out to students and graduates of other fisheries schools.

CFOS, through Prof. Victor Marco Emmanuel Ferriols, faculty member of the Institute of Aquaculture (IA), conducted enrichment lectures in fisheries to push for more fisheries technologists. The activity was held at the College of Fisheries and Food Sciences, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST), Zamboanga del Norte on September 1-2, 2018.

Ferriols recounted his personal experience when he took the licensure exam for fisheries technologists administered by the Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) and showed the participants the ropes. Ferriols, a BS Fisheries 2008 graduate of CFOS, UPV, topped the Fisheries Technologist Licensure Examination in October 2009 with a rating of 89.00%. He graduated magna cum laude and was Class Valedictorian.

“The CFOS is conducting activities like this knowing that the country still lacks the critical mass of experts in fisheries to face the issues and concerns of this sector. By helping other SUCs, we are fulfilling our role as the National College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. We should not be content with being the only top performing school when it comes to the PRC, but instead, we should be paving the way for other universities to be there with us at the top,” Ferriols said.

The undertaking was attended by participants from ZCMST, Mindanao State University and personnel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from the neighboring regions.

CFOS graduates consistently dominate the top 10 passers in the aforesaid board examination with the College having the highest passing rates among the different fisheries schools in the country. It was awarded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Excellence in Fisheries Education and as the National University/College of Agriculture and Fisheries by the National Agriculture and Fisheries Education System (NAFES).
