Legarda to speak at the book launch on Panay-Guimaras Traditional Knowledge Systems at UP Visayas
Sen. Loren B. Legarda will be the guest of honor and the keynote speaker during the launching of the book, “From Seas to the Mountains (Kadagatan tubtob Kabukidan) Panay-Guimaras Traditional Knowledge System,” to be held on August 9, 2018, Thursday at the UP Visayas Auditorium, Iloilo City.
The coffee table book is the product and final output of a project entitled, “Book on Panay-Guimaras Traditional Knowledge Systems for Cultural Resiliency and Sustainable Development” (TKS-CRSD).” It was conceptualized to revitalize the core of Panay-Guimaras culture through a book that will document and feature traditional knowledge systems (TKS) that impacts cultural resiliency and sustainable development.
Divided into five themes, the book features articles and photographs on: 1.) Forest and Biodiversity (Forestry), 2.) Water Bodies and the Coastal Environment (Fisheries), 3.) Arable and Habitable Terrains (Agriculture), 4.) Sustainable Arts and Crafts (Arts and Crafts), and 5.) Environmental Rituals and Traditions (Literature and Rituals).
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) tapped the University of the Philippines Visayas to spearhead the publication this book. Collaborations were done with the following universities including University of Antique, Aklan State University, West Visayas State University, Capiz State University, and Guimaras State College for its completion.
Anna Razel Ramirez is the Coordinator for the project. The book writers are the following: John Barrios, PhD (Literature and Rituals), Joyce Christine Colon (Farming Practices and Traditions), Sashah Dioso (Ocean/Marine and Coastal Environment), Martin Genodepa (Arts and Crafts), and Randy Madrid, PhD (Forest and Biodiversity).
Editor of the book is Prof. Martin G. Genodepa while principal photography was provided by Ramon Ramirez. UP Professor Emeritus and anthropologist, Alicia Magos, PhD, served as chief editor and consultant.
