2nd Iloilo Pride March campaigns for love
Carrying rainbow flags, banners and donning colorful costumes, hundreds of activists and supporters gathered on October 7, 2017 at the UP Visayas main entrance and marched to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The event marked the second Iloilo Pride March of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) Community. The theme this year was “Sa Iloilo, Gugma Madaug” (In Iloilo, Love Wins).
Anti-Discrimination Ordinance champion, Councilor Inday Lee Zulueta welcomed the groups at the capitol grounds at 4:00 PM, that as well commenced the program proper. National Youth Commission Asec. Commissioner Rhea Penaflor and Iloilo City Councilor Jay Treñas were among the key participants of the event. A Zumba dance joined by those in attendance capped the event.
Participated by the LGBTIQ activists, advocates and allies from Iloilo City, the Pride March was held to make known to the rest of the society the LGBT communities’ struggle as part of the society’s larger struggle for social justice, gender equality, love, peace and freedom.
The Pride March was organized by ILOILO Pride Team, chaired by Justin Francis Bionat and student organizations of UPV that included UPV-Student Council, UPV Tubong Mindanao, UP Lipad, and an LGBT Psychology Class. The groups from UPV were spearheaded by staunch LGBT advocate Prof. Moniq M. Muyargas from the College of Arts Sciences of UP Visayas. Prof. Pierce S. Docena, Chair of the UPV Tacloban College Division of Social Sciences joined her in the event.
Participating groups include the following: ASEAN SOGIE Caucus, The Family Planning Organization of the Philippines, partners from the Department of Health, Side B Philippines, United Church of Christ in the Philippines, Gabriela Panay, and the UPV student community. (IPO)
