COP/BIDANI joins NNC in the launching of Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition
The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN), the country’s blueprint of actions for nutrition improvement, was launched on May 2, 2017 at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, Iloilo City.
Health Secretary and National Nutrition Council Governing Board Chair Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial led the ceremonial turnover of PPAN 2017-2022 to the Iloilo Province represented by Governor and Chair of the Provincial Nutrition Committee, Arthur D. Defensor, Sr. This turnover was symbolic of the services provided under the PPAN, wherein the Iloilo province is one of the 38 priority areas of PPAN because of the large numbers of stunted children. Based on the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) in 2015, 33.4% or 3.8 million children are stunted while 7.1% or 807,057 are wasted. It also showed that overnutrition manifesting as overweight and obesity are emerging health concerns among children and a major problem among adults with 18 million Filipinos who are overweight and obese.
Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Maria Bernardita T. Flores presented the PPAN 2017-2022 and expressed hope that the new plan of action will be embraced not only by nutrition implementers, but also most especially by the Local Government Units (LGUs) and the Filipino people.
The launch also highlighted an exhibit of the eight nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programs of the PPAN. Two of these programs are the National Nutrition Promotion Program for Behavior Change in communities and Nutrition in Emergencies which COP/BIDANI can focus on to contribute to the attainment of the goals of PPAN.
The participants were composed of the members of the regional media groups organized by NNC, Chairs of the Regional and Provincial Nutrition Committees, various NGOs, and the academe involved in nutrition as well as international development partners. COP/BIDANI was represented by Prof. Josephine Firmase and Remedios Huesca.
The COP/BIDANI is an extension arm of the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo.
