Faculty members from the three campuses of UP Visayas handling the general education (GE) courses participated in a two-day workshop on the new UP GE program held at the training rooms of the Graduate and Continuing Education Building, Iloilo City campus on June 22-23, 2015.
UPV Chancellor Rommel A. Espinosa gave the welcome remarks while Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Emilia S. Yap gave the opening remarks.
Dr. Patricia B. Arinto, chair of the UP GE Task Force presented the proposed framework for general education in the University of the Philippines in the 21st Century. Prof. Lorna Almocera and Prof. Antonino De Veyra of the UP GE Task Force were also present to observe and answer queries regarding the framework during the open forum that followed.
The 11 GE courses developed during the system-wide mini-conferences, which were participated in by experts across the UP System, were likewise presented. These courses include Wika, Kultura at Lipunan; Critical Perspectives in Communication; Critical Perspectives in the Arts; Philippine Arts and Culture; Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas; Ethics and Moral Reasoning in Everyday Life; Self and Society; Math, Culture, and Society; Science, Technology, and Society; Living Sytems; and Probing the Physical World.
Dr. Lourdes Zamora presented the UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) curriculum and appealed for the help of college faculty in the development of courses for the senior high school or grades 11 and 12. She requested that they as well teach the courses even just for the first two years and consider these as service courses.
In the workshops, the participants from the different colleges and school discussed range of units and the courses that will be included in the list of core/require and electives for the UPV GE program; a course map showing the possible distribution of the GE courses in each degree program’s study plan; and the mechanics of implementing the new GE Program in UPV in terms of class sizes, team-teaching arrangements, and credit load for faculty members working as part of a team handling GE courses.
Prof. Liah C. Catedrilla, member of UPV GE Committee, echoed the UP Diliman proposal for a GE Center and discussed the possibility of establishing a similar academic support structure in UPV that will manage the implementation of the new GE Program. It was agreed that a committee be formed to study the matter.
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA) through the UPV GE Committee organized the workshop. Prof. Severa M. Katalbas is the chair of the committee with Prof. Tomas Talledo, Prof. Susan Tosalem, Prof. Jose Go, Prof. Irma Tan, and Prof. Liah C. Catedrilla as members.
