UPV students top 30th PSQ-Iloilo provincial eliminations

University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) students secured the top two spots in the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz-Iloilo Provincial Elimination held at the Iloilo Grand Hotel in Iloilo City on September 29.

Freshman BS Statistics student, John Lennard Divino, emerged as the champion earning the highest score among 56 participants from 19 colleges and universities across Iloilo. He was followed by fellow UPV Student Jhon Richard Tabornal, an Applied Mathematics I student, who finished as first runner-up.

Together with Divino and Tabornal is Laurence Paul Mallo, a BS in Statistics I student, who also finished as a finalist. The three UPV representatives were coached by UPV Statistics faculty members Mr. Glenn Ivan Macitas and Mr. Francis Yestin Javiero.

Organized annually by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the PSQ aims to assess the statistical competency of Filipino students and promote the relevance of statistics among the youth.

The provincial elimination consisted of three rounds with contestants required to score at least 10 points in the first two rounds to advance to the final round. The top three scorers were declared provincial winners and will represent Iloilo at the regional level.

Divino and Tabornal, alongside Heineken Joyce O. Sajorne of West Visayas State University (WVSU), will represent Iloilo at the Regional Championship on October 14, 2026.
